Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
” —Philippians 4:6-8Thank you so much for your encouragement. As a performer, writer, and hopeful teacher, it means quite a lot to know that you’ve been inspired to be more open. That’s always something I want to leave with folks I interact with at shows and workshops, the idea that their story matters, that what they have to say is important and can impact other people in ways they never expected. Good to know that, for you, that aspect of the art really hit home :-)
Thank you! I had a friend remind me today of how much the Black women in our lives have gone uncelebrated for all that they have done. It’s an honor to hear you say that the piece reminds you of your father. That’s quite a compliment, and is especially impactful for me, as the opportunity to be a loving, consistent father is something that I desire with all of my heart.
To be honest, when I sat down at my dining room table to write “10 Things” I never imagined that this poem would be received this way. I wrote it as a reply to Falu’s “10 Things I Want to Say to a Black Man”, a beautiful piece I’d heard at the Nuyorican a week or so before. God has truly done a miraculous work with this poem. It’s amazing to see how He’s used it.
Thank you, sis! BNV was such a blessing, it’s hard to explain. I don’t think any of us imagined at the time that that summer would turn into a project with the potential to reach so many people. To know that I have in any way helped your writing process is humbling, and I thank God for the opportunity to be used by Him in this moment. It’s truly been a beautiful ride :-)
Thanks for reaching out, Joe! It would be great to link up, brother. God willing, I’ll be home in a couple of days. Are you on Twitter/Facebook? If you are, let’s try and exchange details and set up a meeting time. Cool?
